Honorary titles and prizes

Professional artists of exceptionally high merit may receive official recognition for their work in the form of a title or award.

The title of Art Academic is awarded by the President of Finland to a distinguished artist nominated by the Arts Council of Finland. At any one time there can be up to 11 art academics.

Artist professor grants are awarded on the basis of applications to artists of exceptionally high merit. Recipients of these grants are entitled to use the title of Artist Professor.

Prizes

State prizes are awarded annually by the national arts councils. State prizes can be awarded to an artist or a group of two or more artists in recognition of a work or performance in a specific artform that has been completed within the last three years and is of especially high artistic merit. State prizes can also be awarded to artists for their long-term valuable work for the benefit of a specific artform. In addition, state prizes can be awarded to art associations or other communities.

Regional arts councils award annual art prizes to distinguished artists, art societies or other communities in recognition of meritorious and important work over the previous year. Art prizes may also be awarded in recognition of long-term and distinguished careers or activities.

Prizes are financed from lottery funds.
