Intended recipients

Each year the Board for Grants and Subsidies for Writers and Translators awards subsidies to writers and translators of both fiction and non-fiction who live or have lived permanently in Finland and whose work enriches Finnish cultural life.

Subsidies for works of fiction are awarded to representatives of the following literary genres: fictional prose (novels, short stories), poetry, drama, aphorisms, essays, books for children and young people, niche literature (i.a. science fiction, fantasy, speculative fiction, detective stories, fictional nature stories), as well as albums and comic books that include a lot of text.

Subsidies for works of non-fiction are awarded to writers and translators of general non-fiction books. They are not awarded to authors or translators of scientific research, text books or similar works of professional literature within a narrow field.

Purpose

These subsidies are intended for

  • elderly writers and translators living in reduced financial circumstances.

The subsidies are not available to applicants whose taxable annual income exceeds the annual amount of a state artist grant (approximately 20 070 euros).

Amount

The amount of the subsidy is 1000 to 4 000 euros.

Appendices

Applications should include

  •  clarification of the applicant’s financial situation, such as latest tax records.

Eligibility

Factors that may influence the decision include

  • the applicant’s previously published works
  • the applicant’s financial situation

These subsidies are discretionary. The Arts Promotion Centre Finland monitors the use of subsidies and is entitled if necessary to review the finances and activities of the recipient. This decision is subject to the Act on Discretionary Government Transfers (688/2001).
