Multidisciplinary Art
Art that is created in between different art forms and displayed outside traditional exhibition forums is evolving all the time. In the current decade, for example, the relationship between the performing arts and performance is very topical.
Although Finnish art administration is organised according to individual artforms, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary art is also supported. Some of the recipients of this support are active in two of the fields of art identified by the Arts Council of Finland, such as artists who are involved with musical theatre productions and illustrated books.
According to statistics, artists in Finland who break the barriers between artforms and their projects are supported as much as representatives of traditional artforms.
The Arts Council of Finland allocates funds for projects that are not covered by other forms of support. Each year artist grants are awarded to approximately 20 multidisciplinary artists, including 10 on five-year grants, six on three-year grants and three on one-year grants. In addition, the Arts Council of Finland awards approximately 65,000 euros a year in grants and subsidies for multidisciplinary art projects. Multidisciplinary art applications are reviewed by all national arts councils.
