Finnish Arts and Culture Agency distributes 650,000 euros to cultural magazines and online publications
Cultural magazines in Finland maintain a diverse social debate about culture, science, the arts and different worldviews. The amount of each grant was determined by both the quality and circulation of the magazine and the necessity of the grant. The supported cultural magazines and online publications represent a broad range within specific fields of the arts to general culture, opinion and peace magazines.
“The change in the Finnish media environment is challenging the status of cultural journalism from many directions. In this situation, it is more important than ever to support a broad and financially sustainable range of cultural magazines,” says Henri Terho, Director of the Arts and Culture Funding Department.
The biggest increase in funding was awarded to Rondo magazine, published by Classicus Oy. The magazine has expanded from a music-focused publication to a performing arts magazine. The amount of the grant was 39,000 euros, which is 24,000 euros more than in 2025. Förbundsarenan rf, which promotes the circulation of Swedish-language cultural magazines, received an increase of 3000 euros.
A new grant recipient was Granskaren r.f, which was awarded a grant of 10,000 euros. In addition, three applicants returned after a break as recipients of a general grant: Garantiföreningen för Nya Argus rf, The Ulkopolitist ry and Utgivarföreningen för tidskriften Astra rf. All three were awarded a grant of 10,000 euros.
A three-year grant was awarded to one applicant, the free-of-charge Voima magazine, which was also awarded the largest single grant of 73,000 euros. Among Swedish-language publications, the cultural magazine Ny Tid received the largest grant of 50,000 euros.
Six applicants who had previously received support were awarded smaller grants. This year, no grant was awarded to Isot Tekijät ry (Iso Numero), Kulttuuritoimitus Suomi Oy (kulttuuritoimitus.fi) and Sateenkaariyhteisöt ry (ranneliike.net), which had previously received support. The assessment criteria included the ambition, effectiveness and quality of the applicant’s operations, their implementation of action, the sustainability of their finances and the feasibility of their budgets.
The appropriation for cultural magazines and online publication was 30,000 euros less than in 2025. The grant assessment panel for cultural magazines and online publication was consulted when making the grant decisions.
