State artist grants awarded to 298 artists

The arts councils of the Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike) have awarded state artist grants to 298 professional artists. The majority of grants are funding the work of visual artists and writers.

A record number of applications were received, more than 2800, an increase of almost ten percent over the previous year.

The grant work funded by Taike starts from the beginning of 2021. The duration of the artist grants varies from half a year to five years.

“It is important that Finland’s highly qualified artists have the opportunity to work freely for extended periods and benefit society on multiple levels. State artist grants make this possible. In the future, care must be taken to ensure that grant work is valued as any other work, that the purchasing power of this support increases and that normal social security is accrued,” says Taike Director Paula Tuovinen.

Strongest competition for grants among the visual arts

The success of grant applications varies by artform. Obtaining an artist grant was most difficult in the fields of the visual arts, music and multidisciplinary art. Funding was sufficient for less than ten percent of applicants, even though the visual arts accounted for the highest number of awarded grants, 58 in total. In the field of music, obtaining a grant became more difficult as the number of applications increased by almost a third compared to the previous year. The other extreme was architecture, in which every third applicant received a grant.

Growing share of female artists

Female artists account for 61 percent of all the artist grants that have been awarded, while their share of applicants was 57 percent. The share of female applicants was lowest in the field of music, as it was last year. In the field of cinema, female artists accounted for slightly less than half of applicants but almost 70 percent of recipients. Female artists were also strong in the field of comics.

Young artists represent one in six grant recipients

Next year, 52 young artists under the age of 35 will begin working on a state artist grant. The share of young artists among grant recipients has remained the same as last year at roughly 16-17 percent. Young artists represent the majority of grant recipients in the field of circus art, at least one in three in the field of dance and one in four in the field of photographic art.

Around 70 percent of applicants from Uusimaa

Among the 298 grant recipients, over two hundred live in Uusimaa in Southern Finland. The share of artists from Uusimaa is highest among translators, theatre and dance artists, and musicians. Altogether, artists from Uusimaa represent 72 percent of all grant recipients. Among all applications, 69 percent came from Uusimaa, compared to 61 percent in the previous year.

Awarding of grants based on peer reviews

Applications for state artist grants were reviewed by seven arts councils with a total of 74 members. Artists in different fields of the arts and other experts participated in the peer reviews. Members of the arts councils can serve for a maximum of two consecutive two-year terms.

Taike determines how the grants are distributed between the different artforms, after which the arts councils for each artform select the recipients independently. The awarding of grants is based on the Artist Grants Act (734/1969).

The total amount of artist grants is approximately 12.7 million euros per year.  Altogether, almost six hundred artists will be working on an artist grant from the start of next year. The amount of each artist grant is 1960 euros per month, from which the grant recipient must pay for compulsory pension and accident insurance
