Annual statistics 2024: Taike awards 46 million euros in support for the arts and culture

Taike awarded a total of 46.4 million euros in government grants in 2024. For the first time in Taike's history, the amount of government grants was lower than the previous year. The total amount of grants decreased by almost seven percent (3.4 million euros) compared to 2023. The decrease was due to budget cuts and the discontinuation of special subsidies for cultural activities in sparsely populated rural areas and the related appropriations.
Taike processed 15,526 government grant applications for support in 2024, of which 2169 received a positive decision. On average, 21 percent of applicants received the support they had applied for.
The number of positive decisions decreased clearly. In 2024, Taike awarded 11 percent fewer subsidies and grants than in 2023. The decrease was due to budget cuts but also to Taike's strategic decision to respond to the cuts by targeting support more precisely.
Of the 46.4 million euros in support distributed by Taike, 24.6 million euros was awarded to individuals and working groups, 21.4 million euros to communities and 0.4 million euros to recipients of state and regional art prizes.
The largest amount of Taike support in 2024 was awarded within the fields of the visual arts (7.7 million euros), theatre (6.6 million euros), literature (6.3 million euros), music (6.2 million euros) and dance art (4.9 million euros).
Regional distribution reflects location of professional artists in Finland
The grants awarded by Taike once again reflected the geographical distribution of applicants. Approximately half of Taike's grant recipients were from Uusimaa (56.7 percent of applicants, 55.9 percent of recipients). Pirkanmaa accounted for the next largest number of grant applicants and recipients (8.9 percent of applicants, 8.8 percent of recipients), followed by Varsinais-Suomi (7.3 percent of applicants, 8.4 percent of recipients), Northern Ostrobothnia (3.9 percent of applicants, 3.7 percent of recipients) and Central Finland (2.9 percent of applicants, 2.8 percent of recipients). The number of grant recipients increased among those living abroad, as well as in the Päijät-Häme and South Karelia regions.
Average age of applicants is 44
The average age of individual applicants for Taike grants in 2024 was 44 years old. Individuals under the age of 35 accounted for 20 percent of applications and 14 percent of recipients, while 18 percent of applicants and recipients were over the age of 55.
Foreign-language speakers represent 7 percent of applicants
In 2024, 88 percent of individuals who applied for a grant were Finnish speakers, 4.8 percent were Swedish speakers and 7.1 percent were foreign-language speakers. Among recipients, 89.4 percent were Finnish speakers, 4.2 percent were Swedish speakers and 6.3 percent were foreign-language speakers. In Taike's statistics, foreign-language speakers are considered to be people who declare their mother tongue to be something other than Finnish, Swedish, Sámi or sign language. The most common foreign languages declared by applicants were English, Spanish and Russian, as in previous years.
