Taike awards 304 artist grants, of which one in six to young artists

The arts councils of the Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike) have awarded 304 artist grants. Most of these grants were allocated to professional artists in the fields of the visual arts, literature, music and theatre.

The duration of the artist grants varies from half a year to five years starting from the beginning of 2019.

Over half of the grant recipients are women, as were over half of all applicants. The share of women is highest in the field of design, where they account for almost 90 percent. Approximately two-thirds of grant recipients in the fields of dance, performance art and the performing arts, as well as art journalism, are women.

Out of all artist grants for music, almost half were awarded to women, who accounted for just over a third or applicants in this field. Female musicians and composers applied mainly for shorter grants. Only one-fifth of applications for five-year grants were made by women, and all five-year grants were awarded to men.

One in six grant recipients is a young artist

A portion of the artist grants were allocated in advance for young artists or artists at the beginning of their careers. This year, 49 of the grant recipients are under the age of 35.

The proportion of young artists varies according to artform. In the field of illustrations and comics, half of the grant recipients are young artists. At least a quarter of recipients are young artists also in the fields of music, dance and circus art, as well as performance art and the performing arts. Among the performing arts, the share of young artists is less than ten percent only in the field of theatre. No young artists are represented among the media artists who received artist grants, and not a single young translator applied for a grant.

Majority of grant recipients live in Uusimaa

Three-quarters of the artist grants were awarded to artists living in the Uusimaa region, where the majority of applicants also live. Most grants awarded to artists in the Uusimaa region were in the fields of media art, cinema, photographic art, theatre and music. The majority of applicants in these artforms – at least two-thirds – were also from Uusimaa. Over 60 percent of all applicants for artist grants were from Uusimaa.

Visual artists, writers, translators and critics account for the highest proportion of grant recipients living elsewhere in Finland. Almost 40 percent of writers who received artist grants live outside of Uusimaa, compared to 44 percent of writers who applied for artist grants. A third of visual artists who were awarded artist grants also live outside of Uusimaa.

Eight percent of all artist grants were awarded to artists living in the Varsinais-Suomi region and five percent to artists living in the Pirkanmaa region. Seven artist grants were awarded to artists living in Lapland and six to artists living in Northern Ostrobothnia (two percent of the total), five to artists living in Häme and three to artists living in North Savo. Individual grants were awarded to artists living in other regions.

One in nine applicants awarded a grant

On average, one in nine applicants was awarded a grant. The most competition for grants was in the fields of the visual arts and multidisciplinary art, where fewer than 10 percent of applicants were awarded grants. The least competition was in the field of architecture, where nearly every other applicant was awarded a grant.

Altogether almost 2700 applications were received, which is five percent more than in the previous year.

Around 70 experts provide peer reviews

After Taike decides how the grants are to be distributed between the different artforms, the national arts councils for each artform select the recipients.

The seven national arts councils have broad expertise within their specific fields of the arts. The members of the arts councils are all professionals or other experts in their fields who serve two-year terms. This year around 70 experts provided peer reviews.

The arts councils evaluate the artistic merits of the applicants, such as their previous artistic activities and working plans. They also take into account such factors as age, gender, place of residence and language.

Over 600 professional artists work in state artist grants each year, representing approximately three percent of all artists in Finland. The tax-free amount of each artist grant is 1,709 euros per month, from which the grant recipient must pay for compulsory pension and accident insurance. The total amount of artist grants is approximately 11.5 million euros per year. The awarding of grants is based on the Artist Grants Act (734/1969).
