Government grants for the arts and culture awarded by Taike face 1.3 million euro cut in 2026
The cuts in the budget proposal are targeted at two different appropriations. An appropriation of EUR 18.5 million is proposed for arts promotion, which is EUR 600,000 less than this year. This appropriation would cover general grants for the arts, internationalisation grants for the arts, as well as regional grants and project grants for the arts.
A separate appropriation of EUR 6.4 million is proposed for cultural inclusion and accessibility, representing a cut of EUR 700,000. This appropriation would cover general grants for festivals, general grants for culture and project grants for culture, as well as general grants for cultural magazines and online publications.
The cuts in appropriations would not apply to statutory artist grants, public display grants for visual artists or library grants for writers and translators.
More details on the targeting of cuts by the end of November
Taike is preparing an impact assessment of the cuts and their targeting, based on which it will make decisions on the allocations for different forms of support. Taike will publish preliminary information on the changes to allocations for the forms of support by the end of November. The final decision on the targeting of allocations among the different forms of support and fields of the arts will be made in January, after Parliament has decided on the 2026 Budget.
Calls for applications for government grants available to communities will open on 1 October 2025, while the call for applications for project grants for arts professionals will open on 5 November 2025. All of Taike’s calls for applications this autumn will open under the new name of the Finnish Arts and Culture Agency on the Applyforgrants.fi service.
