Ääreen – interactive dolphin pods and animations in Oodi Central Library

Ääreen is a project that showcases Finnish and international interactive, documentary animations. Running throughout October, the programme consists of exhibitions, screenings, discussions and interviews that bring together experts from a broad range of disciplines and offer multidisciplinary experiences for the public.

The Kuutio facility at Oodi hosts a piece entitled Inside another skin. Deep diving – what is it like to swim among a pod of dolphins? (2021). The interactive animation by Leena Pukki and Karoliina Paappa is on show from 7 to 31 October. Produced with support from the Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture (AVEK), the work is presented on two walls of the innovative venue. The animation is accompanied by an echolocation soundscape that can be felt physically in the body.

“The work seeks to transpose a dolphin’s experience into a form that is perceivable and understandable to a human viewer. It is an immersive art experience designed to enhance the experience of empathy,” say Leena Pukki and Karoliina Paappa.

Every Thursday, Ääreen offers programme at the Oodi Central Library that is also streamed online. Panel discussions feature animators who talk about their work and its background. Filmmaker and multimedia artist Uri Kranot from the ANIDOX forum conducts a master class that explores the genre of documentary animation and its potential.

Throughout October, the large screens in the Oodi lobby will feature animations curated by the Finnish Animation Guild along with experimental animations by Aalto University students. The works are based on visuality and diversity. The programme also includes animation workshops for children and young people.

On the International Animation Day on 28 October, animations will spread throughout the entire Oodi building. The programme starts with a panel discussion, arranged with the Finnish Documentary Guild, on the interplay between animation and documentary. One of the panellists is Leena Kilpeläinen, whose film about Maija Isola will premiere this autumn. Screenings at Kino Regina will feature both short and long animated films throughout the evening. The programme is produced in collaboration with the National Audiovisual Institute (KAVI) and Turku Animated Film Festival.

Works by graduate and minor students of the Aalto University animation programme will be presented at special screenings from 28 to 31 October on the 2nd floor of Oodi.

The project is a joint effort by Arts Promotion Centre Finland, Oodi Central Library, Finnish Animation Guild, Turku Animated Film Festival, Artists’ Association MUU, Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture (AVEK), Aalto University, Danish ANIDOX forum, National Audiovisual Institute KAVI and the Finnish Documentary Guild.
